2019 Fishing Open!

Wednesday 7th November, 2018

Thank you to everyone who attended our annual meeting on the 26th October. We hope you enjoyed the evening and found the presentations interesting. Our thanks also to Nigel Elgar, who gave an interesting talk on Dwr Cymru Welsh Water's Usk Mega Catchment.

History of Salmon Management

Those interested in salmon conservation might be interested in a lecture on "The History of Salmon Management" that will be given by Dr Ron Campbell, Senior Biologist for the Tweed Foundation.

The lecture will be at 7.30pm on 15th November at The Anatomy Lecture Theatre E/0.09, The Sir Martin Evans Building, Museum Avenue, Cardiff CF10 3AX. It follows the AGM of the Welsh branch of the Institute of Fisheries Management and is £5 for non IFM members. Please email Harriet Alvis to reserve a place if you wish to attend.

Farlows Trophy

Entries are still being welcomed for the Farlows Trophy, awarded each year to the captor of the largest fly-caught salmon safely released in an English or Welsh river. The winner not only receives the trophy but also a £500 Farlows gift voucher and a huge bottle of gin!

Anyone who has caught a large (20lb+) salmon on fly this season can enter the competition here.

Fisheries Open for 2019!

Many of the Passport fisheries are now open for 2019 bookings with popular dates being snapped up fast! Please check on the Fishing Passport website for availability or call us on 01874 711 714.

Coarse anglers will also have a unique opportunity to fish the opening day of the 2019 season on an exclusive Wye beat. June 16th for two coarse anglers at Wyesham, just downstream of Monmouth, is available as a lot in our upcoming auction which starts on 19th November. The full list of lots will be published later next week.

River Wye & Usk Salmon on the Menu

Earlier this week we received a report of a restaurant in Worcestershire advertising river Wye salmon on their Christmas menu. We informed the Environment Agency, whose enforcement officers visited the establishment promptly and found it to be a case of over-enthusiastic marketing rather than a fisheries offence.

There have been similar instances in the past that have led to prosecutions by Trading Standards. If you come across what looks like wild Wye and Usk salmon being advertised please report it to the EA's 0800 80 70 60 incident number (0300 065 3000 for NRW if in Wales) as soon as you can.

Dr Ron Campbell of the Tweed Foundation

Opening day of the 2019 coarse season on the famous Wyesham beat is available to bid for in WUF's fundraising auction starting on 19th November

Catch a large salmon in England and Wales in 2018? You could be the winner of this year's Charles Farlow Trophy and a huge bottle of gin!

On a happier Christmas note, Fishing Passport Gift vouchers, 2019 Wild Stream Season Permits, maps of the Wye make fantastic presents and WUF Christmas cards will also be available. Please visit the Passport shop for details.

All the best from WUF.
